Template 'A' - Start-up Business Plan Template

Details

This template Word document provides you with a broad framework for a start-up business plan for a franchise business.

It is based on the ‘Business Planning Process’ outlined in Part 2 of my book (Starting or Re-routing your Business Journey) and is a fundamental part of my ‘VALUE GROWTH BUSINESS MODEL’.

Chapters 3 to 6 will be particularly helpful to you. They cover subjects such as setting and showing your core and supporting SMART business objectives and creating and showing your related and costed strategies to help you achieve each one.

The template provides appropriate and structured spaces for all this to be included and of course for your commentary on your market, competitors, required resources and staffing needs.

Chapter 11 will help you to complete the Business Development / Marketing part of the template but please note the request therein that care must be taken to ensure you follow you franchisor’s requirements and guidelines and stay ‘on brand’.

The general format of this template plan has helped many hundreds of franchisees to 1) be accepted into the franchise networks of many top brands and 2) obtain bank and asset finance from a range of banks and asset finance companies.

Chapter 7 gives you a number of good tips and hints in respect of the latter. Also, you will find that the template has a set of appendices that includes:

  1. a personal income and expenditure statement template
  2. a personal assets and liabilities statement template
  3. a CV template

The purpose of the three additional template documents mentioned above and which are normally required by lenders as part of their assessment process, is to give them a satisfactory insight into your own personal financial position and an understanding of your education, skills and relevant work experience.

On the financial side they will be looking to ensure that your household / family monthly expenses can be covered by the amount of money coming into that unit (including the salary, drawings and/or dividends you show for yourself in your business plan financial projections).

They will take a view on the written assumptions and assertions in your business plan as to how realistic you are being and what level of risk they will be taking in lending to you.

They will also be looking to see what your total personal borrowing is, compared to the value of your personal assets, and whether you would be likely to be able to cover any potential guarantee liability, if this became necessary.

Franchise Network Compliance

Some franchisors have their own specific business plan templates that they will wish you to use. However some will leave it up to you and will wish to see what you come up with, which helps them to judge whether they think you are a suitable candidate to join their franchise network.

You need to check their requirements in this respect. If it is the former then that’s fine and whilst you will not need to purchase this template the book will still be very useful to you and you may still find some of the other resources or bfa Advisor Member introductions on this website useful to you.

However, if you are able to use this template then please adapt and adopt it to suit your own needs and particular set of personal and business circumstances.

Financial Projections

Unfortunately, because of the wide variance in the type of franchise business models that exist (e.g. some sell stock, some are service only providers, some are retail and don’t give credit whilst some are business to business models and therefore do, and some need to include VAT on their sales and others don’t, etc.) it is not possible for me to provide a ‘one size fits all’ fully integrated financial projections template.

Therefore please understand that the template I am providing is a word document only and does not include a projections package.

However, my book provides a lot of information in Parts 4 and 5 to help you to understand accounts and cashflows and create your own set of Financial Projections. Alternatively it provides you with a good knowledge base to discuss your requirements with an accountant or one of the bfa member Advisors who can help you with this or provide a projections workshop.

Template 'B' - Growth Stage Business Plan Template

Details

This template Word document provides you with a broad framework for a ‘Growth Stage’ business plan for a franchise business.

This is the second stage and a fundamental part of my ‘VALUE GROWTH BUSINESS MODEL’.

I do suggest that you read through the whole book before you start to complete this template, and if you are suddenly thinking you do not have time for this, then perhaps reading chapter 9 of my book (Making Time to Manage your Time and Yourself) might help to change your mind!

However, if you need to press on more quickly, then I suggest you at least read:

  • Chapter 1 - What do you want to achieve by the end of  your Business Journey and what is the ‘Value Growth Business Model’?

  • Chapter 3 – Driving your business forward with a Business Satnav and regular MOTs

  • Chapter 17 - Knowing where you are now and where you are trying to get to

I suggest you then use chapters 4 to 6 which helps you with setting and showing your core and supporting SMART business objectives and creating and showing your related and costed strategies to help you achieve them.

This template provides appropriate and structured spaces for all this to be included and of course for your commentary on your market, competitors, required resources and future staffing needs.

Chapter 11 will help you to complete the crucial Business Development / Marketing part of the template but please note the request therein that care must be taken to ensure you follow you franchisor’s requirements and guidelines and stay ‘on brand’.

The general format of this template plan has helped many franchisees to obtain bank and/or asset finance from a range of banks and asset finance companies to assist them with the growth stage of their business.
